Who can heal my heart?
My niece mysteriously died on 20 April, 2013. The police are
refusing to investigate the death, They have hidden or destroyed evidence, and
they have not made any attempts to question or investigate the main suspect.
Because of this injustice our family asks for your help to so the truth about
his tragic death can be found, and the persons responsible will face justice.
The facts of the event.
Naw May Thu Thu Zaw (NMTTZ),
returned to Yangon on 18 April from Bible study camp that was held in May Myo from
12-18 April. Her friends who were with her at the camp said she was happy and
she met many new people.
NMTTZ turned 18 in January this year. She was attending the
2nd year of University of Medical Technology, where she got 5 Ds and
she passed the matriculation. NMTTZ had a boyfriend, Ye Min Oo, who is a 2nd
year medical student. NMTTZ wanted to separate from her boyfriend, and this
created arguments and difficulties between them.
According to KMTTZ’s half sister, Kam Mon Htwe (who is now
attending at the Medical college), she had heard NMTTZ arguing with her
boyfriend concerning NMTTZ is separating from him. On the 19th of
April Ye Min Oo called KMTTZ and asked to met her. He wanted to get together on
that day for going to Shwe Dagon pagoda, Pyithuyinpyin, and Junction Square for
buying wool doll for his birthday present, but she refused. After more calls,
NMTTZ finally she said she will go and meet him for the last time. She left her
home at around 11;00 on 19th of April. As she left she said “Am I
not pretty with this my new dress” to her Aunty and her half sister.
Ye Min Oo picked her up by his own car which he drove himself.
His uncle was also in that car. However, later at the police questioning Ye Min
Oo claimed that that his cousin was driving the car on that day and his uncle
is not in the car.
Later on the 19th at
around 5 pm NMTTZ mother tried to call her but no one answered the phone. Her
mother then called Ye Min Oo's phone number (she got eh number from NMTTZ’s
half sister). but no-one answered his phone either. Soon after, however, some unknown
young women answered NMTTZ’s phone, and said that Ye Min Oo had forgotten his
phone in the car and now NMTTZ and Ye Min Oo were visiting the town by taxi.
At 7:50 pm a young male called NMTTZ’s mother, and said that NMTTZ was already
on the bus going home, and she should be picked up. She did not arrive. At
around 11 that night it was realized that she was missing and the family began
searching for her.
On the morning of the 20th KMTTZ’s mother and
Uncle, Saw Aye Min went together to Hmawbi Police station to open a case at
there. The Hmawbi police said the person disappeared in Insein town ship and
living in Mayangone township so that that police suggested them to go to
Mayangone police station.
On the 21st they went together to Ye Min Oo' home
at 8 am and asked them that whether are they stealing NMTTZ, his niece and
hiding her. They replied that they were not hiding nor stealing her. After a
discussion between the families they went together to Mayangone station. The
Mayangone police station postponed the case to Bayint Naung police station by
saying that NMTTZ, your niece is now living in Mayan gone township.
On the 22nd NMTTZ’s family placed advertisements
in newspapers for their missing relative. The pressed the Bayint Naung police
station to start an investigation. As that time, they got a telephone message
from Ye Min Oo saying that he was contacted by the telephone number of NMTTZ. This
could not be possible at NMTTZ only had a sim card and not a telephone.
On the 23rd, on the way to Bayint Naung police KMTTZ’s
family received news that a slim bag was at the Hlaing Thar Yar police office.
In the bag was an ID card with her address, a Student card with her full
address, and an American Centre card with a contact address. The slim bag was received
by the police on the 19th at 8:15 pm on the Aung Zay Ya bridge. The police in
charge on the bridge transferred to the station that bag since 8:30 pm on 19th,
but only informed the family about this 4 days later. The officer was a Chin
Christian police, and he witnessed at worship at his church on Sunday about the
slim bag, and that a girl may have jumped into the river. His pastor sends a
phone called to another pastor who is leading an orphanage near to NMTTZ’s
mother’s home in Kaw Chan village, Hmawbi.
When the family got the slim bag at
the Hlaing Thar Yar station they got another telephone message that a unknown body was at the Insein
Station. They went to Insein station where they saw a photo of the body and
confirmed it was NMTTZ.
The Insein police station had the
body since the 20th but they did not distribute the photo to other
stations. They considered the body is an unknown body and sent the body to Insein
hospital and let the hospital cremate it. There was no autopsy or checking of
the body. The medical doctor did not check the stomach and uterus. The Doctors
did not check anything about the body. The police also contacted Ye Min Oo's family first and they
were able to get to the hospital before NMTTZ’s family.
The official record according to the medical letter from
Insein hospital is that NMTTZ died by drowning into Pan Hlaing river. There was
water found in her lungs.
Poor policing.
There are many problems and
inconsistencies with each idea that NMTTZ down by falling or jumping off the Aung
Zay Ya bridge.
The policing is very poor, with all
police station passing off responsibility from one to another. The Bayint Naung
Station did not distribute a photo of NMTTZ to other station when the case is opened,
even though they said they will distribute within 2 hours.
Hlaing
Thar Yar Police Station did not contact the family even though they had the student
and ID cards with her full, which they received on the 19th, but only
made the call on the 232rd.
Insein Station did not
attempt to contact the family when they had her body, but rather rushed it to a
cremation without a proper autopsy or investigation.
The Insein Police and Yangon Police is now looking for a
taxi that Ye Min Oo and NMTTZ supposed used to travel downtown on the 19th.
After the family wrote letters of
complaint, Yangon Division Police Officers asked many questions. But, according
to the family, they are emphasizing questions that are not so important. They
were given details of the family’s suspicion, but they did not pay attention to
those facts and they do not suspect Ye Min Oo.
Suspicious Denials
When NMTTZ’s mother received the call to get her daughter at
around 7: 50 pm, her bag was found soon after at 8: 15 pm on the Aung Zay Ya
bridge. The bus station where Ye Min Oo said she got on bus and the Ag Zay Ya
bridge is over one mile and there 2 traffic points and any body cannot arrive
there within 30 minutes. The person who made the call must have known she
was not catching a bus, and the person probably knows she was thrown or fell
from the bridge.
According to some
relatives of NMTTZ, the police officers of Insein Township are closed with Ye
Min Oo’s family. Witnesses have said that police or some guys received between 500,000
and 1,000,000 kyats which were divided among themselves in front of mortuary
Insein on the evening of the 23rd.
The only news NMTTZ’s family have received about her body
was from Ye Min Oo’s family. They say that her make up was still on her cheek
and her body is still fresh and mild. Ko San Win, also known as Gauk Gyi, and
officer Hla Aung from Insein police station said that there were some make up
on her face and some yellow bubbles on her mouth when they got her from water
around 9 am on the 20th. There is a possibility that she was given a drug or poison,
but this cannot be tested since the body is cremated. .
The Family’s Views.
The family believe that
Ye Min Oo is responsible.
Even though some persons are trying
to prove that she is committing suicide, they feel she was murdered by her
boyfriend, likely with the help of some other people. There are too many
inconsistencies with the story of suicide:
She was happy and the family firmly believed that she could
not take her own life.
The details of the afternoon by Ye Min Oo’s family have too
many inconsistencies to be believed. She cannot have been dropped off at the
bus station, and then commit suicide minutes later.
The police would always contact Ye Min Oo’s family first
when new evidence arrived, and not NMTTZ’s family.
The police disposed of
the body quickly not allowing for an investigation.
They delayed giving news to the family for days, such as the
discovery of the bag. At the least these are examples of extremely poor
policing. At the most the police are complicit in the cover up of the murder.
Although this case is investigating by Insein police
station, the family fear that the case will dim slowly and disappear. They want
the C.I.D. from Naypyidaw handling the case. They want to see justice and do
not want a murder to go free.
A letter has been sent to Prime Minister of Yangon Division,
Minister of Interior of Yangon, Chief of Police (Naypyidaw), Chief Police of
Criminal Investigation Department(Naypyidaw), Chief of Police of Northern
District, Yangon, and Chief Police of Human Trafficking Department, the Minister
of Interior, Chief of police, and Chief of CID. On Monday, and Daw Aung San Su
Kyi.
Please help the family uncover the truth of this tragic
event.
